I use Google Reader and have feeds grouped into apple, blogs, tech, web-dev and cars. Probably around 250 feeds but that's too much and I need to start slimming it down.

Yeah. But do you find any real benefit from grouping them? I mean sure it seems logical...but does it really help to do that?

I have 250 feeds that I subscribe to... up from 100 a year ago. I started adding them so I could track more trends. It's handy. I don't organize them either. What's the point?

I also have about 250 feeds and use Google Reader. I've got 12 or so non-overlapping folders that while breaking things up by subject, also break things up by how I read them. I keep digg and some other similar active feeds in their own folder because I only give them a passing glance -- and i usually view them as a whole folder instead of each individual feed. Or I keep webcomics by themselves, or artist blogs, webdev blogs, etc. When you roll in late in the morning and want a quick info fix before you go to bed you don't necessarily feel like reading about new javascript techniques or marketing strategies.

I group my feeds because when I open newsfire, and don't particularly care one day for games or tech news, I can mark those groups as read and just have the one's I'm interested in show up as new.

I group into folders depending on content. I've got a movies folder, a news one, one for the tech blogs I read, one for the majority of the blogs, and a folder for the new blogs I've found but aren't certain I want to keep subscribed to.

Then I've got some smart folders set up in Vienna which filter the feeds depending on what folder they were stored in. That way, if I only have time to read the news/a few blogs, I don't have to wade through everything. This is particularly useful for movie trailers. Most days I just don't have time to watch them, so they get saved in a lovely bundle for the weekends :D

To be honest, 9 times out of 10 I read through the entire lot of feeds in one go, but I'm an organisation freak (couldn't be without my folders!) and it does make my life easier when I DON'T want to read everything.

I have a few groups setup:

- Blogs 
- Blogs 
- Blogs 
- Blogs 
- Blogs 
- Flickr
- Design/GUI

I group blogs into each of the 5 groups above ranked on how much I enjoy them. If I love a blog, it goes in the first "" group which is displayed at the top of NewsFire. This way if I have a few minutes, I can skim through the most important content first, all the way through to the least important at the bottom of the NewsFire sidebar.

In Google Reader I've got several sections setup, among them, Links, Daily, Bored, Mac, Stuff....

It really depends on how much time I have to read my feeds, and I choose the categories accordingly. Likewise, if I'm looking for news on a specific subject, (say Apple) I can get it all in one pop, rather than spending the time wading through other stuff that may be less important to me at that moment.

basically, I know what kind of 'news' I'm getting depending on the cat I choose. makes it more focused for me.

Haha, that is so funny that you mention that Josh. I am totally OCD when it comes to Feeds, Links, Photos, eh.. probably anything on the computer. Lately though I have just been grouping them altogether in NewsFire. By the way, keep up the great work on your blog and in your projects. I am a big fan of your work, (I am joester in the sitepoint forums), and I hope you had good luck in all of those sales you were doing.
